Posters, as a mean of promotion and diffusion of political ideas, are difficult to be preserved and classified. Their transient nature and the fact that are posted in public spaces and then are usually destroyed, in a way explain the absence of posters, especially from the pre-junta period. On the other hand, the absence of dates on the posters, makes difficult the classification of them, although they clearly depict the historical events of the specific period.
In the ASKI, there is a significant collection of posters (more than 2000) that is expanding and covers the period from the Metaxas Dictatorship until nowadays. Moreover, there is a large number of rare Greek and foreign posters from the demonstrations against the military dictatorship (Filippos Hliou collection, Giorgos Mylonas archive). However, the vast majority of the posters refer to the post-junta period. Posters from election campaigns of various political parties and youth organisations, from the activities of the Greek students’ movement. Posters of workers’ organizations and trade unions. Posters of the contemporary Greek and international anti-racist and anti-capitalist movement. We should mention the posters that the Greek Conscientious Objectors’ Association donated to ASKI and constitute a unique collection of documents concerning the activities of the Association, of the Greek conscientious objectors and of other organisations that promote disarmament and peace. Finally, the collection included posters from historical and other scientific conferences and meetings, as well as of cultural events of various organizations from 1980 until 2010.
